You'd like the peace and solitude of a Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness trip but can't commit to a weekend for a permit? The Superior National Forest has many "backcountry" campsites that have tent pads, firegrates, and wilderness latrines (an outhouse without the house) that are located by themselves on lakes outside of campgrounds. Most are accessed by water, but some are hike-in sites including those along the Superior Hiking Trail. None of these sites are accessed by road.
