Together "Twin Cities" Minneapolis and state capital, St. Paul, paint a very urban picture that lacks not for cultural color nor pleasant parks with proximity to river, wilderness and Amish country for extra polish.
Hennepin Theatre Trust's Pantages Theatre, opened in 1916 and designed in an Art Moderne/Beaux Arts style, was a vaudeville house originally part of Greek immigrant Alexander Pantages' renowned consortia of 500 theatre. Building costs were approximately $15,000. The Pantages boasted the first air conditioning in a Minneapolis theatre, which involved cooling the air with ice. Alexander Pantages also innovated the mezzanine, a carpeted lobby on the balcony level with restrooms and telephones.
