Vast expanses of deep blue lake shimmer right up to forested shores in Voyageurs National Park, a watery retreat favored by boaters, houseboaters and paddlers alike.
Houston still has a lot of the woodland about it and a lot of the eastern woodland, although this tends to be on the far edge of their range. The American Woodcock, rare on this more northern coast, can show up at Houston Memorial Park and the unique Anhinga can be spotted at the nearby Buckhorn Lake.
Houston also has the hummingbird-heavy Russ Pittman Park, where Rufous, Broad-tailed, Black-chinned, and Ruby-throated Hummingbirds gather in the winter. Other species in Houston are the Green Heron, the Yellow-crowned Night-Heron, the Lesser Scaup, the Red-headed Woodpecker, and the Canvasback.
